a rack of colorful bridal shower outfits for guests

Deciding what to wear to a bridal shower can feel near impossible. There are so many unspoken rules and expectations for the bride and guests, and coming up with bridal shower outfit ideas can be a chore. You’re probably looking to find out if there are any unspoken “rules” for bridal shower outfits you may not know about. Well, yes and no. Most hosts would like you to dress semi-casually to semi-formally, but let’s review some things you may want to know in your hunt for ideas for the perfect bridal shower outfit.

There Are No Hard Rules

This guide focuses on bridal shower attire within Western culture, with an emphasis on US traditions. Attire expectations may differ depending on the couple’s background or the host’s preferences, so when in doubt, check in with them. Here, we’ll spotlight feminine fashion ideas, with future articles dedicated to other styles. And remember; most showers are planned by loved ones on behalf of the bride, so the host is often the person setting the tone.

The Basics

First things first, let’s cover the basics. Know the event’s location, weather, and dress code. Is the venue indoors or outdoors? Is it a casual or more elevated space? Like with any event, knowing the venue’s vibe will give you a good idea of the outfit you should plan for. It’s a good idea to check your weather apps well in advance, but always, always check it on event day. You never know when a sudden change in temperature might make that sundress seem like a bad idea. Last but certainly not least, check if there’s a dress code. Regardless of the “rules” we tell you about moving forward, the host-provided dress code and your comfort are all that matter.

Colors To Avoid

We’ve known many hosts to request a specific color palette for their guests to wear to a bridal shower, but what do you do if you don’t have a color palette? Picking a color to wear is often the trickiest part of deciding on an outfit for a bridal shower. These are a few you may want to avoid.

White

While any other colors on this list can be argued for, white is the one color we’d advise guests to actively avoid wearing to a bridal shower since it is, in many cultures, reserved for the bride. Small white details on an otherwise colorful outfit aren’t usually an issue, but all-white outfits should be avoided unless specifically requested by the bride.

Pale or Pastel Colors

Pastel colors are an excellent choice for a spring wedding, but they often photograph white, so while that pale blue dress may seem perfectly acceptable in person, it may not look so blue in a photo. Many brides won’t mind if their guests rock a pastel color, but try doing a photo test if you want to avoid “I wasn’t wearing white. I swear!” moments. Take pictures of your outfit in natural and artificial lighting, with and without flash. This will give you a good idea of how it’ll appear in everyone’s photos.

Black

Because of its connotation with mourning and funerals, black isn’t a recommended color to wear to a bridal shower. While we’re unaware of any “rules” that explicitly state not to wear black, bridal showers are often colorful events, and you may be inclined to dress in a way that reflects that. At the end of the day, however, this “color to avoid” is more of an aesthetic choice than a rule. Wear what makes you feel comfortable and confident.

Additional Tips

Beyond what we’ve discussed, here are some additional tips for your comfort.

  1. Opt for flats or heels with a wide platform to avoid sinking into the ground at outdoor/grassy venues.

  2. Pack a shawl, jacket, or cardigan in case of any weather changes.

  3. Try sheer illusion tights under your dress for colder weather.

  4. Wearing natural fibers like cotton or merino wool will allow you to adjust to various temperatures more easily.

Outfits For Brides

There are far fewer “rules” for you, our dear bride. After all, this whole event is to celebrate you! You may be expected to come dressed in white, but wear what makes you feel beautiful. This day is all about y-o-u—so, toss the rules out the window and show up in the way you want to. Keep in mind, however, that your family and friends may have a couple of surprises in store for you, so dress comfortably and appropriately for the season.

But Wait…

There will always be a bridal shower that is the exception to each of these rules. The great thing about events like these is that they can be customized for the person we’re celebrating. At the end of the day, this event is for the bride to connect and celebrate with some of the most important people in her life. Keep in mind that this concept is far more important than any outfit decision.
